THE LOWDOWN
Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete (32-1, 27 KO) became a two-weight world champion when he claimed the WBO featherweight title last October in Las Vegas courtesy of a win on points against Ruben Villa. Navarrete previously held the WBO super bantamweight title and remarkably made five successful defences of that belt – all via stoppage – between May 2019 and February 2020, before making the step up to featherweight.
Christopher Diaz (26-2, 16 KO) will be hoping for better fortunes as he came up short when he previously challenged for a world title in July 2018. On that occasion he was defeated on points by Masayuke Ito who duly claimed the vacant WBO super featherweight belt which was up for grabs. The Puerto Rican boxer has won three out of his four bouts since then, the exception being his defeat in April 2019 against Shakur Stevenson in a contest that went the distance.
THE PREDICTION
WBO featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete has enjoyed a lengthy winning streak since the sole defeat of his career back in 2012 and the Mexican fighter looks well set to extend that sequence of success by taking care of business against Christopher Diaz in Florida on Saturday night (early hours of Sunday morning in the UK). Navarrete has a significant reach advantage in this match up and he is likely to use it to good effect by keeping Diaz at range. The champion has an impressive KO ratio so there could well be some value in opting for a win via stoppage if you are having a bet.
