THE LOWDOWN

Unbeaten WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade (29-0, 18 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time since January 2020 to make the fourth defence of the title which he won in October 2018 against Walter Kautondokwa. The fighter from Rhode Island became a two-weight world champion when he captured that belt, having previously enjoyed world title success at light-middleweight before he made the step up to this weight division.

Liam Williams (23-2-1, 18 KOs) has reigned at British and Commonwealth level previously but this is his first shot at claiming a world title so it goes without saying that this is the biggest night of his career so far. The Welshman was last in action last October when he made very short work of Andrew Robinson with a first round KO. That was his seventh straight victory via stoppage since he suffered back-to-back defeats against Liam Smith in 2017.

THE PREDICTION

Liam Williams has revitalised his career with a string of wins via KO/TKO since he lost two fights against Liam Smith in 2017. None of those opponents have been of Demetrius Andrade’s calibre though and one feels that the Welshman will have to produce the performance of his life if he is to capture the WBO middleweight belt in America on Saturday night. The defending champion is a very tricky southpaw who has plenty of big fight experience, he will certainly be fully focussed and well prepared for this contest. One feels that Andrade will see off the brave challenge of Williams and retain his belt – it is worth noting that only one of Andrade’s last seven fights has ended before the 12th round so there may be some value in backing a win for the American via the judges’ scorecards.
