THE LOWDOWN
Unbeaten WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders (29-0, 14 KO) is making his first appearance in the ring since he successfully defended his title against Marcelo Esteban Coceres in November 2019 in Los Angeles. A former WBO middleweight champion, Saunders became a two-weight champion when he defeated Germany’s Shefat Isufi for the WBO super-middleweight belt in May 2019.
Martin Murray (39-5-1, 17 KO) is making his fifth – and probably final – attempt to win a world title when he faces Saunders. The 38-year-old may have come up short on the four previous occasions but he could be considered unfortunate to have not been successful in at least one of those bouts. It would be an emotional occasion if Murray finally secured a world title at this stage in his career.
THE PREDICTION
Billy Joe Saunders is a firm favourite with the bookies to retain his WBO super-middleweight belt against the vastly experienced Martin Murray on Friday evening, and it’s hard to disagree. The champion is a very well-schooled operator and his class is likely to shine through against the challenger who is in the twilight of his career. Murray won’t be beaten easily though - he has only been stopped once in his career - and also given the fact that Saunders does not have a devasting KO record, we may well see this fight go the distance.
Prediction: Saunders to win on points
