THE LOWDOWN

Former unified heavyweight champion Andy Ruiz Jr. (33-2, 22 KO) is back in action for the first time since he was defeated on points by Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia in December 2019. Ruiz has made some significant changes since that loss; he has trimmed down in weight by around 50 pounds and is now trained by Eddy Reynoso, who has the likes of Canelo Alvarez and Ryan Garcia in his stable.

Chris Arreola (38-6-1, 33 KO) has had a longer wait since he last stepped in the ring, as his last contest was in August 2019 when he was outpointed by Poland’s Adam Kownacki. That was his fourth loss in is last ten bouts and another defeat here might well signal the end of an 18-year career which has seen him involved in three world title fights – he came up short on each of those occasions, losing to Vitali Klitschko, Bermane Stiverne and Deontay Wilder.

THE PREDICTION

There is obviously plenty of pride on the line in this heavyweight contest between two Mexican-American fighters on Saturday night in California (the early hours of Sunday morning in the UK). Andy Ruiz Jr. is looking to get his career back on track following his defeat against Anthony Joshua in late 2019 and he starts as a heavy favourite to get the job done against former world title challenger Chris Arreola. Ruiz Jr. has shed plenty of pounds since he lost the rematch to Joshua, he will surely have benefitted from joining Eddy Reynoso’s pool of fighters and is extremely well-motivated to put in an eye-catching performance, which he hopes will lead to a fight against Deontay Wilder. Arreola has plenty of top-level experience during his long career but it is fair to say that he has never been one of the top tier fighters and his best days look to be behind him. All of the signs point towards a win for Ruiz Jr. here.
