THE LOWDOWN

Alexander Povetkin (36-2-1, 25 KOs) recovered after being put on the canvas twice in the opening four rounds to claim a stunning victory courtesy of a surprise uppercut knockout in the fifth round when these two fighters met last August as part of Matchroom’s summer Fight Camp series. The rematch was originally set to take place on 21 November 2020; however, it was postponed when Povetkin tested positive for COVID-19, further dates in January and March were also abandoned. Barring any late drama, they will now finally step into the ring again in Gibraltar on Saturday 27 March.

Dillian Whyte (27-2, 18 KOs) had won 11 fights in a row before his bout against Povetkin last August and the British fighter looked well on course to extend that run before the stunning fifth round KO. Whyte bounced back well from the only other defeat of his professional career – against Anthony Joshua in December 2015 – and he is well-motivated to set the record straight against Povetkin in Gibraltar on Saturday night.

THE PREDICTION

Dillian Whyte is looking for revenge following his defeat against Alexander Povetkin last August and the Brixton boxer certainly needs to deliver if he is to get back on course for a world title shot in the near future. Whyte was very much in control of their bout last time out until he was stunned in the fifth round and he is capable of bossing this contest also. It is expected that Whyte may opt to show more caution though as he will be very wary of getting caught out again. Povetkin cannot be written off easily of course as he is a very accomplished fighter who has only lost to Wladimir Klitschko and Anthony Joshua in the pro ranks, but he is now 41 years old and he may well fade if this goes into the later rounds. A win for Whyte in rounds 7-12 is the tip.
