THE TEAM NEWS

GWS GIANTS

  • GWS Giants’ inconsistent start to the season continued as they lost for the second time in a row as they were defeated by Brisbane Lions last week and the ladder does not make for good reading for the Giants, even at this early point of the season.
  • The Giants did not start well against the Lions and their lacklustre opening half saw them trail by 19 at the break but despite an improved third quarter, they were unable to close the gap as the Brisbane outfit held on to win 68-88.
  • Another poor showing has resulted in the Giants making changes to their side this week with Bobby Hill and Jackson Hately omitted while Shane Mumford drops out through injury so Daniel Lloyd, Sam Jacobs and Toby Greene come into the side.

RICHMOND

  • Richmond put in one of their better performances of the season as they were big winners against North Melbourne and they will be confident of extending their winning run as they face GWS Giants in a repeat of last season’ Grand Final.
  • The Tigers suffered a blip following the AFL’s restart but appear to be back on track now with their 4-2-1 record and they have conceded just 49 points in their last two matches.
  • With their form picking up, the Tigers have opted to retain the same side as last week with the exception of one forced change with Josh Caddy ruled out because of injury with Patrick Naish taking his spot.

THE PREDICTION

GWS Giants failed to turn up in last year’s AFL Grand Final as they were thoroughly outclassed by Richmond but they will hope this contest with the Tigers will provide them with a chance to gain a tiny bit of revenge. Even a big win will not help them get over that loss but it could be important for their aspirations in this year’s campaign. They come into this with a 3-4 record and having lost their last two, this looks like a difficult task for them, especially with the Tigers winning their last three matches and it is likely that the reigning premiers will be too good with the benefit of an 8.5 start here.
